The Evolution of My Work – From Door Inserts to Full Door Systems

As many of you might know, my journey in the industry actually began with custom door inserts. Over the years, however, my focus has gradually shifted toward replacing entire door systems rather than just modifying existing ones. While I still take on a few select door insert projects, the shift was a necessary one to keep up with the changing market and ensure the level of quality and service I strive for.

Why the Shift?

The world of custom door inserts has changed dramatically over the years. When I first started, unique, handcrafted designs were the standard, and there was a strong demand for locally made inserts that added a personal touch to any entryway. However, as mass-produced inserts from abroad flooded the market, the landscape shifted. The lower price points and high availability of these factory-made products dictated profit margins that simply didn’t align with the level of craftsmanship required for fully custom work.

That’s when I started focusing more on full door system replacements. This approach allowed me to create truly custom entryways from the ground up—ensuring not just a stunning aesthetic but also top-tier performance in terms of security, durability, and insulation.

Still Keeping Custom Inserts Alive

Despite my primary focus on full entry door systems, I still love taking on a handful of custom door insert projects each year—especially when working with unique designs and clients who appreciate the details. A well-designed insert, combined with proper installation techniques (like ball-bearing hinges, precise door alignment, and sleek black insert frames), can make a huge difference in the final look and feel of a door.

A Surprising Improvement in Builder-Grade Doors

Interestingly, I’ve noticed a positive trend in builder-grade doors in new subdivisions. While I used to see some pretty low-quality entry doors years ago, many modern builder-grade doors have significantly improved. This means that in some cases, instead of replacing an entire door system, simply adding a custom door insert can elevate the entryway without the need for a full replacement.

The Best of Both Worlds

While my main work now revolves around full custom entry doors, I still enjoy the creative freedom that door insert projects offer. There’s something incredibly satisfying about designing and installing a one-of-a-kind custom insert that completely transforms a home’s curb appeal. Whether it’s a fully customized door system or a unique insert upgrade, I take pride in every project that leaves my shop.

If you’re considering enhancing your entryway—whether through a custom door insert or a full door system replacement—I’d love to help bring your vision to life!
