There are walls… and then there are ICF (Insulated Concrete Form) walls! This modern steel entry door installation last summer in Prince Edward County was definitely an interesting one, thanks to the 12-inch deep wall cavity that came with this custom-built home.
A Unique Installation Challenge
ICF walls are great for energy efficiency and durability, but they add an extra layer of complexity to door installations. With such a deep wall cavity, ensuring a flush and seamless fit takes some extra precision. Luckily, I had time to dial in every detail on this install, making sure the fit was perfectly aligned.
The door itself features a sleek steel slab with a large glass panel, complemented by a matching full-glass sidelite. This combination brings in natural light while maintaining a clean, minimalist aesthetic that fits the modern architecture of the home. The long stainless steel pull bar adds a touch of contemporary style while keeping functionality in mind.
A Late-Night Solo Install in the Countryside
Since the client hadn’t moved in yet, I had the chance to work late into the evening to make sure everything was just right. Looking out at the pitch-black fields while working solo made for a surreal but cool experience. There’s something special about being completely immersed in a project, with nothing but the sound of tools and nature around you.
Meeting a Fellow Tradesman in the Field
One of the highlights of the day was finally meeting Evghenii from Upper Level Finishes (@upperlevelfinishes) in person. When someone’s idea of fun is driving out to a remote site to help build something, you know you’ve found a true tradesman. There’s nothing better than working alongside people who share the same passion for craftsmanship and quality.
Looking Ahead
I have a long list of amazing people I’ve connected with through Instagram, and meeting them in person is always a goal. Maybe one day, I’ll just show up at different job sites with my tools and an espresso machine—because what better way to meet fellow craftsmen than by building something together?
Would you be up for it? Let me know!
