Jobsite Therapy: Installing a Custom Woodgrain Fiberglass Door (Throwback to COVID Times)

In times of uncertainty, there’s something grounding about being on-site, tools in hand, and creating something beautiful and functional. This throwback takes us to the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, when installing this stunning woodgrain fiberglass door provided a much-needed dose of jobsite therapy.

A Delayed Start, but a Satisfying Finish

Originally scheduled for late February, this door installation was delayed by over three weeks due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic. Like so many others at the time, production and installation schedules were thrown into disarray. My client, who was preparing to move into the house, was patiently awaiting its arrival. While the delay was unavoidable, I was glad to finally deliver and install this long-anticipated entry door.

Adjusting to New Norms on the Jobsite

This project was also a reminder of the rapid adjustments everyone had to make during those uncertain times. The “one trade/crew per jobsite” rule was becoming the norm, and it was reassuring to see many trades adopting measures to protect everyone on-site.

For my part, I implemented several new protocols to ensure the safety of my client and myself:

  • Separated the work area from the rest of the house (already part of my dust-control routine).
  • Maintained physical distance from the homeowner throughout the day.
  • Thoroughly cleaned and disinfected the door and work area after completing the installation.
  • Processed payment via e-transfer to minimize contact.

Although it still felt surreal—especially with emergency alerts buzzing on my phone—it was refreshing to focus on the task at hand and take a break from the constant stream of news updates. Sometimes, being immersed in your craft is the best way to stay grounded.

Exploring New Details and Hardware Combinations

One of the highlights of this project was working with a new combination of hardware: a pull bar paired with a knob and a multipoint lock system. This setup worked like a charm, blending functionality with sleek, modern aesthetics. Multipoint locks not only enhance security but also help keep the door straight and perfectly aligned over time.

Another detail I’m particularly proud of is the use of stainless steel for all visible hardware. From the hinges to the pull bar and handle, every piece is made from 304-grade stainless steel. This material isn’t just durable—it’s timeless. Years down the road, if the hardware shows any signs of wear, it can be buffed and polished back to perfection. It’s these little details that make all the difference and elevate the finished product.

A Door That Stands Out

The door itself is a beautiful woodgrain fiberglass design that combines the warmth and elegance of wood with the durability and low maintenance of fiberglass. Its modern aesthetic is perfectly complemented by the stainless steel hardware and privacy glass, making it both functional and visually striking.

While every installation has its challenges, projects like this remind me why I love what I do. Seeing the finished product come together—and knowing it will serve the homeowner well for years to come—is always deeply satisfying.

A Look Back: Resilience During a Challenging Time

This installation was more than just another project—it was a testament to the resilience of homeowners, tradespeople, and communities during an incredibly challenging time. Navigating new safety protocols, adapting to changing schedules, and finding ways to keep moving forward felt surreal yet essential. It’s a period I’ll always remember, not just for its difficulties but also for the lessons it taught me about adaptability and perseverance.

Moving Forward

Looking back, this installation felt like a small step toward normalcy in an otherwise uncertain time. While the new safety protocols and adjustments to how we worked took some getting used to, they were worth it to ensure the safety of everyone involved. And as always, I’m grateful for the opportunity to deliver a product that combines craftsmanship, attention to detail, and quality.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support Lusso Design, and here’s to more projects that challenge and inspire us. Stay safe, and let’s keep building together.
