Custom Steel Double Doors with Unique Metal Inserts

Custom Steel Double Doors with Unique Metal Inserts

Every project comes with its own story, and this custom steel double door is no exception. While the door configuration itself is quite straightforward, the custom metal inserts elevate it to a whole new level. No other door looks quite like this one, and that’s exactly what makes it stand out.

A Design with History

The client was deeply involved in the design process, searching through the design library to find the perfect metal insert pattern. Interestingly, this particular pattern was originally created for another project but never made it into production due to last-minute changes. Seeing it finally come to life in this installation felt like a perfect match.

Subtle Details That Make a Difference

Beyond the custom metalwork, there’s another small but impactful design choice—the clear glass border around the privacy glass. This subtle design element allows just a bit more natural light to pass through while breaking up the solid look of privacy glass. It’s a great way to maintain privacy while ensuring the entryway doesn’t feel too closed off.

A Lesson in Planning for the Unexpected

One thing I’ll always remember about this project? The alarm tech who arrived a few days after installation and accidentally yanked the wiring out of the door jamb. 🤦‍♂️

As part of my standard service, I always route the alarm wiring through the door jamb, making it easier for technicians to install the alarm sensors. While it typically only takes a few minutes to complete, I usually leave the final connection to the alarm company to avoid any liability. My goal is to ensure everything is 99% ready so there’s little room for mistakes—but as this project showed, you can’t account for everything!

A Door That Stands Out

At the end of the day, this steel double door turned out beautifully, balancing custom design with practicality. The custom metal inserts, clear glass detailing, and clean painted finish all come together to create a one-of-a-kind entrance. Despite a few hiccups along the way, it’s a project that highlights how thoughtful design choices can transform even a straightforward door configuration into something truly special.
