When browsing through our finished projects, you’ll probably notice quite a few oversized entry systems. Large single doors, double doors, oversized sidelights, and towering transoms tend to grab attention.
But that doesn’t mean smaller doors can’t make an impact.
In fact, some of the most interesting projects are standard-sized single doors where the design relies on thoughtful details rather than sheer scale. This steel door is a perfect example.
The Challenge with Decorative Glass
As many of you know, my background is rooted heavily in custom metalwork and glass design. Because of that, I’ve always paid close attention to the decorative glass options available in the market.
The problem is that most suppliers tend to offer the same limited collection of decorative glass patterns. If you’ve been shopping for doors long enough, you’ve probably seen the same handful of designs repeated over and over again.
For me, that was always a little frustrating.
Custom decorative glass was certainly possible, but for many years it came with its own challenges. The design process could be complicated, logistics could be difficult, and the pricing could become surprisingly expensive. Sometimes all three happened at once.

This particular steel door features one of my favorite contemporary decorative glass styles.
The design uses thin beveled glass elements arranged in a clean, modern pattern. The bevels catch and refract light throughout the day, creating visual interest without overwhelming the simplicity of the door itself.
Paired with a black steel door and black hardware, the glass creates a modern look that feels elegant rather than flashy. It’s a great example of how decorative glass doesn’t have to be traditional or ornate to make a statement.

While larger doors often steal the spotlight, projects like this remind me that good design isn’t about size—it’s about details.
A thoughtfully selected decorative glass design, quality materials, and a cohesive color palette can completely transform a standard-sized entry door.
And when those details come together properly, even a smaller door can become the focal point of the entire front elevation.
