Today, I’m reflecting on a project that brings back both pride and nostalgia. If you’ve followed my Instagram stories from that long-forgotten day in March 2020, you might have caught a few glimpses of the fiberglass entry door we installed with my apprentice Mark. But the door in the picture I’m sharing today? That one was installed by me, months before.
Scrolling back through my gallery, I realize just how many of the photos I took back then are nearly unusable. Many were taken in near-total darkness, with the finished doors illuminated only by the glow of Milwaukee floodlights. These photos are a reminder of my stubbornness—or perhaps my dedication to the craft. The jury’s still out on how to describe that particular character trait, but one thing is certain: my decision to stop subcontracting installations years ago was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Why I Chose to Handle My Own Fiberglass Entry Door Installations
When I decided to start installing my own doors instead of relying on subcontractors, I knew it would come with challenges. The door industry is fast-paced, and like most contractors, I could have easily continued outsourcing installations to maximize the number of projects I could take on. But deep down, I realized that something was missing.
By taking full control of the installation process, I could ensure that every project met my personal standards. I could focus on the tiny details that make a difference—perfectly aligned hardware, smooth finishes, and flawless sealing. These small details matter, especially when working with custom fiberglass doors, which offer a combination of style, strength, and long-lasting performance.
Over time, this level of precision became my calling card, and I’ve become proud of the fact that I can pull off projects most people wouldn’t attempt on their own.
The Challenges of Going Solo
Of course, this commitment has its downsides. Choosing to personally handle installations has meant:
- Taking on fewer jobs within a given timeframe.
- Sacrificing sleep and pushing my body to its limits, especially in those early days.
- Rediscovering levels of sleep deprivation I hadn’t felt since my university days in Moscow, when I was working two jobs while pursuing my degree.
There were nights when I found myself working past 1 AM, exhausted but determined to finish what I started. And yet, even with all the challenges, being on the tools has always felt right. There’s a certain satisfaction in knowing that the job is done exactly the way I envisioned it. Every fiberglass door installation becomes a reflection of my craftsmanship.
The Benefits of Fiberglass Entry Doors
Fiberglass entry doors have become a favorite choice for many of my clients—and for good reason. They offer the perfect balance of elegance and functionality. Unlike wood, which can warp or crack over time, fiberglass resists moisture, warping, and rot. This durability is essential, especially in places like Toronto, where weather conditions can be extreme.
Every time I install a custom fiberglass door, I’m reminded of how important proper installation is. Even the most durable materials can’t perform well if they aren’t installed correctly. That’s why I pay close attention to sealing, waterproofing, and ensuring that the door frame is perfectly aligned to prevent drafts or water leaks.
Building a Team of Like-Minded Professionals
As rewarding as it’s been to take charge of installations, I’ve also come to realize that running a business this way isn’t sustainable in the long term. Over the past few years, I’ve been fortunate to connect with some incredible like-minded professionals—people who share my passion for craftsmanship and understand the importance of getting every detail right.
It’s been refreshing to collaborate with others who take pride in their work. It allows me to take on more projects without sacrificing the quality that Lusso Design is known for. Together, we can achieve results that would be impossible to reach alone.
Training the Next Generation: My Apprentice Mark
One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been passing down my knowledge to the next generation. Mark, my apprentice, is a perfect example of this. He came to me with zero construction experience, but his eagerness to learn and adapt has been inspiring.
Watching him pick up techniques and apply them on-site has been one of the highlights of my career. I’m proud to see how quickly he’s grown and how willing he is to embrace the challenges that come with custom door installations.
Will he stick around through the bitter cold of winter and the long, grueling days? Time will tell. But for now, I’m happy to have someone by my side who’s as committed to learning as I am to teaching.
Looking Ahead
Today was a good day. Not just because we finished another successful fiberglass door installation, but because I see a bright future for the work we’re doing. Training the next generation and surrounding myself with like-minded professionals has shown me that craftsmanship isn’t a solo journey—it’s something we can pass on and expand upon together.
As I reflect on the path I’ve taken, I’m grateful for every challenge, late night, and long day. It’s these experiences that have shaped me and allowed me to grow, both as a craftsman and a business owner.
Here’s to many more projects, more good days, and more opportunities to build something that lasts.
