Curved Entry Doors: When Design Meets Complexity

Curved Entry Doors: When Design Meets Complexity

Adding curvature to a door system changes everything.

What might seem like a simple design choice—rounding the top or introducing an arch—actually adds a completely different level of complexity, both in production and installation. And if you really want to take it up a notch, wrap that entire system in glass.

That’s exactly what we did on this project.

A Door System That Pushes Limits

This was a 42-inch-wide, 8-foot-tall entry door, paired with two curved sidelights and a curved transom. On paper, it sounds impressive. In reality, it was one of the most complex systems we’ve ever worked on.

Every component had to align perfectly:

  • The curvature of the door
  • The matching radius of the sidelights
  • The transom tying everything together
  • And the glass fitting seamlessly into all of it

This isn’t something you can just adjust on-site. Everything has to be right from the start.

Production Delays and Real-World Challenges

Like many projects during that time, this one was heavily affected by pandemic-era production delays. Fabrication took much longer than expected, with timelines constantly shifting as materials and components became available.

By the time everything was finally ready, we were just focused on getting it installed properly.

And the installation itself? Exhausting.

We worked late into the evening to get everything set, aligned, and sealed. By the time we wrapped up, there was no time—or energy—left for photos. Not that they would have turned out great in the dark anyway.

Coming Back for the Final Shots

Luckily, I got a second chance.

The client asked me to come back for a small adjustment, which gave me the opportunity to properly capture the finished result. And I’m glad I did—because this door deserved it.

At this scale, the system has serious presence. The dark walnut stain on the interior adds depth and richness, while the casing profile—matched to the rest of the house and stained to the same tone—creates a cohesive, finished look.

From both inside and outside, the entry becomes a true focal point.

Why Projects Like This Matter

This wasn’t an easy project. Between design complexity, production delays, and installation challenges, it tested just about every part of the process.

But it’s also exactly the kind of project that makes the work worthwhile.

It’s one thing to install a door. It’s another to build something that feels architectural, something that becomes a defining feature of the home.

This one definitely falls into that category.

Put a lot of love into this one.

And to the client—thank you for the patience and trust. Definitely one for the books.
